Is Shopify Plus Worth It? Who Actually Needs It (2026)

Spend enough time in the Shopify ecosystem and you'll hear the same advice on repeat: "You should move to Shopify Plus." For many brands it's unnecessary. For a smaller group it's one of the highest-ROI moves they can make. So is Shopify Plus worth it? It depends on whether it solves a problem that's already costing you money. At Uvidest we've found the stores that benefit most aren't the biggest - they're the ones that have outgrown standard Shopify.
What Is Shopify Plus?
Shopify Plus is Shopify's enterprise plan for high-growth and high-volume brands. Pricing starts at roughly $2,300/month on a 3-year contract or $2,500/month on a 1-year contract - a steep jump from Advanced (~$399/month).
That flat fee isn't the whole picture. Above about $1M in monthly GMV, Plus shifts to a variable model: roughly 0.25% of GMV on a 3-year term (around 0.40% on a 1-year term), capped at $40,000/month. And the platform fee is only part of the spend - once you add apps, integrations, and development, the all-in monthly cost of running a Plus store typically lands between $4,000 and $8,000+, depending on complexity.
You're not paying for a nicer dashboard. You're paying for enterprise functionality that starts to matter once complexity slows growth.

If you can't point to two or three rows you genuinely need, you probably aren't ready for Plus yet.

Who Doesn't Need Shopify Plus
If your store does under roughly $1M-$2M annually, has a simple catalog, doesn't sell B2B, doesn't run multiple international storefronts, and doesn't need advanced checkout customization - you probably don't need Plus.
We've seen brands spend thousands upgrading while still having weak UX, slow product pages, and checkout friction. Plus doesn't fix those - a better-built store does. Upgrading early to "grow into" Plus is usually a mistake; that monthly difference is better spent on product, marketing, or conversion work.
When the Fee Math Works (and When It Doesn't)
There are really two separate questions hiding inside "is it worth it," and mixing them up is where most advice goes wrong.
Question 1 - When should I start evaluating Plus? Around $1M/year (≈$80K/month). Not because the fees pay for themselves yet, but because that's typically where operational complexity - B2B, multiple storefronts, checkout you can't customize - starts to bite. At this stage the case for Plus rests on features, not fee savings.
Question 2 - When do the fees alone pay for Plus? Higher up, and it depends entirely on how you take payment.
The fee advantage is real but specific: Plus charges a lower platform fee on third-party gateways (~0.2% vs ~0.6% on Advanced). If you process through an external gateway rather than Shopify Payments, that 0.4% gap compounds fast.
Here's the actual math. Take a store doing $500K/month through a third-party gateway:
- On Advanced: 0.6% × $500K = $3,000/month in platform fees
- On Plus: 0.2% × $500K = $1,000/month
- Monthly saving: ~$2,000
The extra cost of the Plus subscription over Advanced is roughly $1,900/month ($2,300 vs $399). So at around $500K/month in third-party gateway volume, the fee savings alone already cover the upgrade - everything Plus adds in features becomes a bonus. Below that you're paying for capability; above it, the platform increasingly pays for itself. That's why the $500K-$800K/month range is where Plus tends to make clear financial sense.
The honest caveat most agencies skip: this only works on third-party gateway volume. If you run everything through Shopify Payments, there's no 0.6% surcharge to save on - only a smaller card-rate spread (~2.4% on Advanced vs ~2.15-2.25% on Plus). At that narrower gap, break-even sits much higher, closer to $1M+/month in GMV, and the decision rests on features, not fee math. Run your own numbers with your real payment mix before you assume the savings are there.

When Plus Actually Makes Sense
Beyond the math, Plus is the right call when at least two or three of these are true:
- Operations outgrow your storefront - multiple warehouses, teams, or pricing structures
- Advanced checkout control - custom logic, discounts, and rules via Checkout UI Extensions and Shopify Functions (note: these require development work)
- B2B is meaningful revenue - company accounts, custom pricing, and payment terms built in
- International expansion - ~10 expansion stores and multi-market infrastructure
- Your team hits limits - unlimited staff, higher API limits, dedicated support
-
High third-party gateway volume - where the lower fees offset the cost (see the math above)
The Wrong Reason to Upgrade
The biggest mistake: upgrading because you believe Plus will increase conversions by itself. It won't. If your product pages are weak, mobile is slow, or checkout creates friction, Plus won't fix that. We've seen Advanced stores outperform Plus stores - because conversion optimization matters more than subscription tier, always.
FAQ
Is Shopify Plus worth the extra ~$2,300/month? When your current limitations cost you more than the subscription in lost sales or wasted time. Under ~$1M/year with a simple catalog and no B2B, usually not.
When should I upgrade to Shopify Plus? Start evaluating around $1M/year, or earlier if you hit specific limits: checkout you can't customize, B2B needs, multiple storefronts, or API/staff caps. The fee savings alone only justify the jump at higher volume - roughly $500K+/month through a third-party gateway, or $1M+/month on Shopify Payments.
How much does Shopify Plus cost? From ~$2,300/month on a 3-year contract or ~$2,500/month on a 1-year contract. Above ~$1M monthly GMV it shifts to ~0.25% of revenue (3-year) or ~0.40% (1-year), capped at $40,000/month. With apps, integrations, and development on top, most Plus stores spend $4,000–$8,000+/month all-in, depending on complexity.
Does Shopify Plus increase conversions? Not on its own. It gives you more tools; conversion gains come from how you build and optimize your store.
Do the lower Plus fees apply to Shopify Payments? Largely no. The biggest fee advantage is on third-party gateways (~0.2% vs ~0.6%). On Shopify Payments you only get a smaller card-rate reduction, so the savings are more modest.
Final Thoughts
Shopify Plus is the right step for businesses where operational complexity - not traffic or conversion - is the bottleneck. The best merchants don't upgrade because they're told to; they upgrade because they can name the problem Plus solves and have done the math.
Not sure you've hit that point? An independent Shopify Plus readiness assessment is usually more valuable than another subscription. At Uvidest we help brands find where growth is actually limited - conversion, UX, checkout, or platform architecture - and whether the answer is Plus or something cheaper. Sometimes it's Plus. Sometimes it isn't.
